PART 2: DARPON SHAKKHI - Mirror Witness - a short play by the playwright Chandan Sen
Darpon Shakkhi is a short play by the playwright Chandan Sen. It depicts how an insignificant person like Haru, who works as the servant in the family of Bimalesh Roy and Neelima Roy is instrumental in making all the family members reflect on the dark secrets of their lives which they are hiding from each other. Haru has another associate Jagannath working with him as another elderly servant in the family of Bimalesh and Neelima. Haru is constantly harping that he will reveal everything on the 1st day of the coming month. His words have a powerful effect on Bimalesh, Neelima and on their adult son and daughter, Bony and Kasturi. Scared of any unwanted humiliation and embarrassment, all the family members one after another try to bribe, cajole, coax and resort to all means to make Haru reveal everything. But Haru is adamant that the first day of the coming month will be his day of revelation.
In the meanwhile, having failed to know anything from Haru, Bimalesh and Neelima calls in for their family friend Mr. Sanyal who is a police officer and their relative Satyapriya Banerjee who is a Member of Parliament to deal with Haru. But they fail as well to know anything from him. Ironically, Haru becomes a conscience personified character in the house of Bimalesh and Neelima. One after another, Bimalesh, Neelima, Bony, Kasturi along with Mr. Sanyal and Satyapriya Bannerjee suffer from pricks of their conscience and reflect on their past deeds and actions. Will Haru reveal the family's secret before his deadline or will the family members be able to comprehend what Haru will reveal? To know more about it, watch the play Darpon Shakkhi on October 11, 2014 at the Eckhardt-Gramatte Concert Hall, University of Calgary.
