Synopsis of Nagarlakshmi

Famine stricken Srabastipur is filled with the desperate cries of the starving populace. The Buddha intervenes and calls upon his disciples to join in the relief work. The wealthy, the prominent, and the powerful apologize and decline citing logistic difficulties.

The Buddha is struck speechless and sits grieving in the town hall. Suddenly, in steps a mendicant nun and offers her services to supply food the starving. The whole hall bursts out in astonishment. How does a penniless woman armed with a mere begging bowl dare to accept such an enormous challenge?

This poem by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore is a poignant and haunting reminder of the humanity and compassion that is at the core of the Buddha’s teachings. Interspersed with songs by the same poet, Anubhav presents dance drama Nagarlakshmi.
